The AKAMAI Foundation is the crucible of a public-private partnership between Hawaii asset managers, academia, and the public sector. The AKAMAI Initiative is a two-pronged approach aimed at improving economic and educational opportunities for Hawaii residents by leveraging sustainable competitive advantages unique to Hawaii’s natural environs and people, as it relatest to domicile selection for Asia-focused asset managers.
The AKAMAI Finance Academy (AFA) is a 5-year, Asia-focused financial analyst training program that begins in the senior year of high school and runs through the senior year of college. The training program is based on a practical, fully integrated, problem-based, daisy-chained, mentor-protege learning approach known among Hawaiians as “Ma Ka Hana Ka Ike” which translates to “from the doing comes the knowledge.” During the course of the program, students are taught all of the aspects of long/short equity asset management and then given the chance to repeatedly apply their newfound skills to assist in the operation of a pan-Asia, long/short equity portfolio. Additionally, during the summers, students participate in local finance internships, travel throughout Asia on a supervised field study and take part in international and/or mainland-based finance internships. Upon graduating from college and completing the AFA, students are placed with an asset management firm to begin their careers.

The AKAMAI Prep Program is a 4-year program that runs from 8th – 11th grade. AKAMAI Prep is designed to 1) increase awareness among Hawaii students about the numerous career opportunities in finance and 2) ensure that Hawaii students are academically prepared to enter the AKAMAI Finance Academy in their senior year of high school. Students meet weekly after school at their respective high schools with a designated teacher to learn more about a particular career within finance, attend guest lectures from prominent members of the international money management community, participate in a stock market simulation game and perform community service activities. Additionally, students are taken on quarterly field trips to visit with the key people in the local asset management industry.
