Our model turns the traditional educational and hedge fund models on their heads:
Unlike traditional educational models, where students pay tuition to enter the school and then focus on theory, we take practical problem-based learning approach known among Hawaiians as "Ma Ka Hana Ka Ike" or "From the doing comes the knowledge." We plan on operating two long/short equity funds (one trading Japanese equities and one trading Chinese equities), in which students are hired into the program as Jr. Analysts during their senior year in high school, and get paid to work and learn in the funds (comparable first-year analyst pay):
| 1. | Reinforcing theoretical training through work-based application; |
| 2. | Aligning positive incentives (base salary plus performance bonus tied to fund performance); |
| 3. | Eliminating the need to take an unrelated job to finance their education and living expenses; |
| 4. | Building self-confidence and independence; |
| 5. | Building a transferable track record of experience and expertise in their sector of coverage during the 5-year program. |
Unlike traditional hedge fund models, both the Japan and China long/short Equity Funds will be 100% owned by an educational non-profit so the funds are the "school" and the funds manage the non-profit parent's endowment. Any profits generated by the operationof the fund:
| 1. | Is recirculated back to the educational mission to improve the training program; |
| 2. | Provide students with equipment, materials, and supplies; |
| 3. | Provide the best lecturers and trainers; |
| 4. | Pay for all costs involved in field studies and internships in Asia, etc. |
The program is absolutely free of charge to ensure socioeconomically disadvantaged and/or at-risk members of the community are able participate. Once the endowment is secured, the fund will begin to hire students into the funds and pay comparable analyst compensation packages. What's better than free? We pay you.
What's the Catch?
There's no catch. Work hard, bond with your Cohort members, and help us continue improving the program - make it better for the next guy. Someday when you have achieved your desired level of success in your career, do something good for your community in a way that is meaningful to you.
